NATHAN ROAD SPORTING PRECINCT

Moreton Bay Regional Council required a ‘vision’ for a low-lying lot adjacent to the Newport Waterways canal estate. The topography and nature of the site created a significant constraint in determining what type of development was appropriate. In conjunction with the engineers, AS Design completed a master plan for a local sporting facility which responded to Council’s requirements and needs.

The master plan includes a main AFL field, secondary multi-purpose field and training field, wetland planting, bio-swales, drainage swales, playground facility, dog park, buffer planting and retention and rehabilitation of existing vegetation.

As a result of overland flow from the neighbouring residential development, one-quarter of the site comprises of an elaborate meandering detention basin with wetland planting, public and maintenance access paths and a pedestrian bridge.

A clubhouse and children’s playground are strategically located in between the ovals adjacent to a central car park. Buffer planting is situated along the side boundaries and along Nathan Road frontage. Specifically located viewing shelters along the ovals’ perimeter and grass viewing mounds under shade trees provides relief from the open sun.

Species of plants and trees are to be predominantly native and able to withstand the harsh conditions as well as complement the existing vegetation to be retained.
